Project Detail

Past project – metagenomics of human gut

Approximately 1000 species of bacteria live in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Many diseases have been linked to imbalances in gut bacteria. Microbiome-based therapies offer promising therapies for these diseases. Simone’s PhD research, undertaken at EMBL Heidelberg for her UNSW degree, focused on metagenomic analysis after faecal microbiota transplantation. How do the donor and recipient strains coexist after FMT? What happens to the transplanted bacteria? The results of Simone’s PhD were published as a first author manuscript in Science. Congratulations, Simone!
